Located on the slopes of Montjuïc, the Fundació Joan Miró, Centre d’Estudis d’Arts Contemporanis, commonly referred to as the Fundació Miró, is a museum of modern art founded by and honoring the work of the great Catalan artist Joan Miró. It is one of the most popular museums in Barcelona and renowned as a dynamic, inter-disciplinary space at the forefront of the promotion of contemporary art.
The artist Joan Miró was born in Barcelona in 1893 and was to become one of the most influential and avant-guard artists of the 20th century in Europe. He was inspired by the surrealist and cubist movements that were emerging across Europe at the beginning of the 20th century and went on to develop his own distinguishable style in light of them. The Fundació Miró was the artist’s own idea, which he developed in collaboration with his close friend Joan Prats. The building in which the foundation was to be housed was commissioned to the Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert, who drew much of his inspiration from one of the torchbearers of Catalan Modernism, Antoni Gaudí. The museum was designed so as to create a natural pathway across the different spaces and rooms and includes a number of open-air terraces and roof spaces for visitors to enjoy the sense of nature afforded to it by its location amongst the parks and green spaces of Montjuïc hill.
